Thank you to all of you who prayed for our 2 camps. In the end we had exactly 50 children at each camp. They sang songs in English and Chinese, played games, made crafts, had 2 English classes each day, and also heard 2 Bible stories each day – for a total of 10 stories through the week.
After each story there was a discussion time in small groups. During the 3 days of training for our helpers, some of the helpers were skeptical that young children would have anything to say during the discussion times. They wondered whether the children would answer the questions we had prepared to get them to think about the stories. After the camps one of the helpers told us that he was surprised that the children actually had more to say than a lot of adults! One grade 2 boy asked him, “God spoke to Abraham. How can we hear God’s voice?”
All of the children were invited to come to our house Saturday afternoons for a kids club with an English class, singing, and a Bible story like we told at the camp. We handed out a registration form to parents and have 25 children signed up to come on Saturdays starting August 16th. Sadly some children told us that they want to come, but their parents don’t want them to come.
The principal at the school where we held the first camp was very happy with the camp and has asked that we run a camp again next summer (and subsequent summers too!). We told her that it all depends on whether we can have a team come to help again. Actually, we would like 2 teams next year so that we can run the camp at more schools.
Looking ahead to August, we will be in Taipei for a week for both training and to help run a Simply The Story (STS, http://simplythestory.org/oralbiblestories/) workshop teaching Bible story telling. This is essentially the method that we used with the children at the camps. We will also be at an OMF church planting retreat for 3 days, followed by OMF Field Council meetings for David.
Last, but not least, we plan to start regular house church meetings at our house on August 16th.
The plan is to have the kids club from 3:30-5:00, and the house church meeting from 5:30-7:00 followed by supper together.
Highlights for prayer:
- Praise God for great helpers, no accidents, good weather, and for the 50 children who attended each camp. Thank Him too for the 25 children signed up to come to our house on Saturdays.
- Pray for a good start to the Saturday program and for a good number of children to come.
- Pray for a good start to our Saturday house church meetings.
- Pray for 2 short term teams to come and help run summer camps next summer.
With love from Taiwan,
David and Ruth
